According to the NYTimes.com, the USA imported over 15 billion lbs (7 billion kilos) of fresh produce in 2006 and in 2007, those figures will be boosted by the importing of fresh mangosteen for the first time.
Previously fresh mangosteen had only crept into the USA illegally, probably via various Chinatowns. Their importation had been stopped primarily because of the risk of importing pests from S.E. Asia, where the mangosteen is primarily grown, commercially. However, with improved irradiation techniques, the mangosteen fruit is now available, retailing for about $10 lb.

FYI, I live in Australia, where fresh mangosteen has been available for years. In 2005, shortly after starting on Xango, I purchased a couple of trays of mangosteen and I can attest, the taste of the fresh fruit was marvellous, probably the most delicate I've ever had and comparable in a very different way, only to the robust tastes of the very best mango.
I also made my own mangosteen paste from the peel, the pericarp and (going off Xango for the duration) found the pericarp's health benefits incredibly powerful, perhaps, dollar for dollar, about 8 X (in the USA, probably 4 X) as powerful as Xango.
However, the taste of the pericarp paste was so vile, so vomit-inducing, that I couldn't consume it more than a few times! It broke my heart to throw it away but I couldn't bring myself to touch it after a while. I'm sure that this is the reason that using mangosteen for internal health is so little-known, even in S.E. Asia: only the very ill would touch it...and when they get better, they don't want to remember it.
N.B.: mangosteen pericarp medicinals have been (and still is) used in S.E.Asian folk medicine for topical conditions for 2,000 years, apparently.
